"Each song on postromantic focuses on a different couple of characters," writes Vivienne Wilder. "But they're all one-sided conversations. The final track, ‘Forever for Tonight’ is fatalistic, sung in the voice of someone who no longer expects to give or receive commitment. Pretending to forget the one that got away.
"It’s very cinematic when I sing it; I really see the set, the characters, the narrative. This is Peggy Lee singing ‘Is That All There Is?” at the Cameron House (a popular dive & music venue in downtown Toronto) with David Lynch mixing cocktails behind the bar. The title & lyrical hook came from my drummer Kyle McGyle mishearing the lyrics in another one of my songs when we were performing live (‘Hey, Hey’ from Waking Up The Dinosaurs). He thought I was singing ‘I will always love you, just for tonight’, which is not at all what I was saying but I loved the just absolutely hilarious cynicism of that line and wanted to use it in a song."
lyrics
Hey baby, yeah you at the bar
You remind me of that movie star
I've been drinking, I hope that you don't mind
But I could look at you for forever
Hey baby, don't be afraid
We're fading, it's getting late
I can tell that something's on your mind
And I could listen for forever
Close your eyes
I'm who you're missing
Just pretend
She's who you're kissing
Hey baby, you're trembling
Don't you worry, I don't want anything
Lean on me, put your hand in mine
& I could hold you for forever
Maybe baby, we're the last ones alive
The floor's empty, it's the end of the night
If you lead me into the light
We could be in love forever for tonight
Close your eyes
And nothing's troubling
Just pretend
Let's keep on waltzing
